Learn more about I-2117 to repeal state’s hidden gas tax — AGC supports the slate of initiatives on the November ballot. One of those is Initiative I-2117, which would repeal the state’s cap-and-trade (hidden gas tax) measure. The Let’s Go Washington campaign has created a short video to explain the problems with the cap-and-trade measure and the rationale to support I-2117. See that video here.
Among the more alarming elements of the cap-and-trade law, also known as the Climate Commitment Act or CCA, is that Attorney General Bob Ferguson has prevented Puget Sound Energy from listing the added costs of CCA on energy bills. (Pro tip: Check your own natural-gas bill from 2022 before CCA was passed to a comparable month in 2024 after CCA was implemented; you’ll likely see a huge increase!).
An Elway poll conducted in May showed that the Yes vote on I-2117 leads by 41% to 31%. That’s encouraging, but it comes with a couple caveats: Initiative campaigns tend to tighten up as election day approaches, and there are still large numbers of undecided voters. Then there’s the issue of money… the No campaigns have raised about $14 million with the help of seven-figure donations from the Ballmers and Bill Gates. Meanwhile, the Yes campaign has raised about $5.5 million.
AGCW will continue to spread the word about I-2117 and the other initiatives. AGCW members are urged to visit the Let’s Go Washington campaign website to learn more about all of them, to consider donating to or otherwise support the effort, and above all, to Vote Yes, Pay Less!
