AGC Safety Team® marks 35 years – One fortuitous day in early 1990, the AGC Safety Committee came together to formulate a plan for a groundbreaking safety management program that would challenge our members to elevate beyond the basics of workplace safety. The idea was simple: use AGCW staff to help evaluate the safety performance of our members, and only the best of the best would be given the recognition. The program called Safety Team® was born, and only a select few companies (23) managed to achieve that coveted status in the first year. Since then, the program has grown to over 360 members in our chapter, with two other chapters using their own version of the program. When the program was founded, it had roughly 25 criteria on the checklist, that included a site visit. Today, our program boasts a checklist with over 200 criteria related to paperwork and jobsite conditions. Our staff conducts over 215 jobsites each year to conduct our inspections and generate corrective action reports.
In 1997, AGCW was able to secure trademarked status of the program as the first of its kind in the nation. With continued efforts and partnership with the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries (LNI), the AGCW was able to secure an agreement for Safety Team® members in good standing to qualify for focused inspections in LNI, with the signing of Directive 2.25 in 2007. In the years since, multiple organizations have adopted similar programming to enjoy the benefits of the agreement we forged nearly 20 years ago. Also, as a result of the work of the Safety Team program, AGCW was able to sign an alliance with the local Region 10 office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). At the time of the original signing, the AGCW was the first construction-related alliance in the nation. While OSHA does not partner on alliances any longer, we still enjoy a very productive and collaborative relationship with them.
We would like to recognize the 17 member companies, below, for their 35-year commitment to safety excellence. Because of their efforts, workers in our industry are safer and able to better enjoy the fruits of their labor. AGC of Washington is proud to represent so many companies that have made safety a core value and are willing to have those values verified via third-party review.
